Obama's Multiethnic Background Makes Him Perfect for Prez
In this fawning piece by Brian Charlton for the AP, Barack Obama's "multiethnic" past is a reason why you should consider voting for him in 2008. Let's look at a few passages.
As he pursues the presidency, the chapters of Obama's unfamiliar biography are drawing greater scrutiny. The Democratic senator from Illinois was born in Honolulu 45 years ago and lived in one the country's most diverse metropolitan areas for the better part of 18 years. He spent four childhood years in Indonesia.
In his 1995 memoir, "Dreams From My Father," Obama recalls experiencing some discrimination growing up in the islands, such as when other kids laughed at his name. He also wrote about his internal struggles as black friends would accuse all white people of mistreating others -- harsh words as Obama was being raised by his white mother and grandparents.
To read this, you would think that no one grew up in bi-racial families before Obama. What a trailblazer! The article makes me think of how the press reacts when a major movie star is pregnant. It's as if no one has ever had a baby before! How will she get rid of the excess baby weight? How will she juggle her fabulous career and motherhood? What color is she having the hired help paint the nursery?
And I'll bet no one has ever had his or her name made fun of before either. Well...that's not exactly true. My last name was made fun of on a regular basis. Maybe I should run for president!
As a teenager, Obama went to parties and sometimes sought out gatherings on military bases or at the University of Hawaii that were mostly attended by blacks. He wrote in his book that he tried drugs and let his grades slip in his final years of high school.
Well at least he isn't going around saying that he "never inhaled." And it doesn't look like the press is going treat him the way they treated President Bush, who was excoriated for a cocaine arrest in his younger years.
Much of the article is full of quotes from Obama's childhood acquaintances, talking about how everyone had high hopes for him, and how he must have internalized his struggle.
We have two years ahead of us in which the press is going to talk about Obama's racial makeup and how he came to terms with it. It's much like how the press made a fuss over Bill Clinton's poor childhood and alcoholic stepfather. The idea is to make us think more about a man who has overcome, rather than pay attention to what qualifies this man to be on office, and what he will likely do if elected.
After all, isn't it more important that we feel good about a candidate rather than look at his record?
Pay no attention to the man's lack of qualifications
behind the curtain!

My fear is the media will handle Obama with kids gloves and will refrain from any criticism due to PC.
Posted by: Mike at February 6, 2007 01:41 PMThere are a couple of exceptions, but the Chicago media is much tougher on Obama than the nationwide MSM. It was the Chicago Tribune that broke the news on the Obama-Rezko real estate deal.
Since news is a competitive business, don't rule out the national media following the lead of the local newsies here.

Give me Alan Keyes. What if HE had trounced Obama in the 2004 election? Why didn't he? Maybe he didn't push the race card..?
