GOP Donor With Terror Ties Means Entire GOP Tainted

What other conclusion could one come to with this headline and accompanying story?

GOP Donor Hit With Terror Charges

WASHINGTON -- A New York man accused of trying to help terrorists in Afghanistan has donated some $15,000 to the House Republicans' campaign committee over three years.

[...]

From April 2002 until August 2004, the man also known as "Michael Mixon" gave donations ranging from $500 to $5,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee, according to Federal Election Commission reports and two campaign donor tracking Web sites, http://www.politicalmoneyline.com and http://www.opensecrets.org.

Yep. Get out the tar and feathers now.

Pam, while I agree with you wholeheartedly that the GOP should not be judged by the actions of a donor (no one can research the actions of every single donor to a campaign), I do fault the NRCC for their initial response upon finding out about the donor's indictment.

When they learned he was being indicted for supporting terrorism, the prudent and logical thing to do would be to announce intentions to either return the money or, better yet, forward it to a worthy, non-NRCC-related charity. (Like maybe the Semper Fi Fund or Soldier's Angels or something.)

Instead, their reply to the media was that they planned to hold onto the money until/unless he is found guilty of the crime. "Innocent until proven guilty" is good and right, but it doesn't always make for good politics.
