An Early Morning Conversation Between a Liberal and a Conservative
I'd like to relate a conversation I heard this morning on the train between a couple of my acquaintances. (I'm paraphrasing, since I wasn't taking notes, and names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the mentally challenged.)
Man 1: Well, [Joe] should be happy with the nuclear blast in North Korea. It shows the incompetency of the Bush/Cheney administration.
Man 2: Did they do it?
Man 1: What?
Man 2: Did Bush and Cheney actually create the nuclear explosion?
Man 1: No, but it shows that they screwed up. They were busy in Iraq when they should have been taking care of North Korea.
Man 2: Oh, I guess we need a Democrat in office. A Democrat would fix it.
Me (whispering to Man 2): A Democrat gave them the reactor.
Man 2: A Democrat gave them the reactor.
Man 1: ...Did you hear about this story in the midwest...?
What a riot. Faced with the facts, Man 1 decides to change the topic of conversation rather than discuss something that clearly puts his viewpoint in a negative light. (I'd like to point out that Man 1's main source of news is the New York Times.)
I've seen numerous articles online that are now gleefully blaming President Bush for this latest development in one of the world's most unstable governments. However, I'd like to posit that if we had decided to go into North Korea instead of Iraq, the left would have been just as angry about it as they are about Iraq. With Iraq, they wanted us to keep on talking multilaterally. We're doing that with North Korea and now it's not good enough?
It's not about doing what's right. It's about the left opposing a president whom they despise because he's a simple, honest man who publicly declares his faith in God, dares to do what he thinks is right for our country, and doesn't care about the "good opinion" of a handful of nations who would stab us in the back the minute it becomes politically expedient for them (France, anyone?). A man who would rather grub around on his Texas ranch during his vacation time than hang out with Hollywood glitterati or go windsurfing. (No more sleepovers in the Lincoln Bedroom for celebrities is a major infraction.)
And what about the rest of the world? While they're busy wringing their hands, I notice none of them did very much in the years leading up to this mess. When America does nothing we're to blame, and when we do something we're to blame...film at 11.
Didn't this happen under Clinton's watch?

Yes I agree, some misarable mistakes hase been made in the past. I think the UN should start taking action to clean up the mess in Nord Korea.
Thank you for sharing this story with me !
Posted by: Marina making pictures at October 10, 2006 09:13 AMJust spent the past long weekend in Las Vegas where 4 of us ended up in a lengthy conversation about the state of the world. I had been under the impression for many years that friend Richard was your standard black Democrat. Turns out that he is a REPUBLICAN just like the other 3 of us at the table. We all have a differing points of view on many issues, but we all agreed that BDS is sheer insanity on the part of the left and a good way to get us all killed.
Either we are the peacekeepers of the entire world or we are not. If the liberals would just decide which it is, maybe we could ratchet down the level of animosity they display. But then they have always been really talented at the "do as I say, not as I do" point of view!

Posted by: Douglas V. Gibbs at October 10, 2006 10:19 PMThis conversation reminds me of some I've had with liberal friends. All too familiar. And ultimately not worth the effort.
Great post!
