Get Off Your Duff, America: Drill Here, Drill Now
My latest at Family Security Matters:
The villain in all of this, of course, is the oil industry. Their enormous profits have become a target by certain politicians and a windfall tax is being proposed on oil profits. Yet the federal tax on a gallon of gas is about twice what the profit the oil companies collect. And bear in mind that an industry that has an enormous output will of course have proportionally large profits. But don't tell that inconvenient truth to those politicians who never met a tax they didn't like. So when can we start taxing the windfall tax? After all, it's the oil companies who do all the exploration, extraction, refining and transportation. The government collects a fee for doing zip.

Good post, Pam (as usual).
I don't usually get bent outta shape over energy policy, but with gas prices creeping up to $5/gallon and the Democrats doggedly opposed to putting forth any kind of coherent energy plan, this has become quite the hot button for me and I had to blog about it this week as well. The refusal to expand domestic drilling – while simultaneously demonizing oil companies for their profits – positively defies my ability to comprehend. Probably because the libs continue to do nothing but demagogue the issue.
The Left in this country are exacerbating a dangerous myopia: their historically lame class warfare rhetoric and poor grasp of economics are combining with their eco-worship and obtuseness on Obama's credentials, creating conditions which are set to drive our economy right into the proverbial ditch.

OPEC? No, they're not the problem. The government is. Sheesh!

"The government collects a fee for doing zip" is not close to being true in the case of the oil industry. There are two ways in which government interferes with capital in a free market. You have focused on one way. For a little more attention devoted to the other way you could check out my three part series on the matter, beginning today, at http://www.middleclassforum.org/?p=33.
I see from some other comments you received I may need to provide a disclaimer. I do not endorse any party or any ideology. In fact, people who pull a party lever, in my mind, would be better served in a totalitarian regime.
